Kochi was one of the 60 cities that were picked up for implementing the Solar city programme initiated by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, which  “aimed at creating self-sustaining cities by leveraging the immense solar potential through renewable energy and several other energy efficiency projects. The programme also aims at “curbing conventional energy demand by 10% in the next five years.

Being the environment management wing of the Kochi Municipal Corporation, the  Centre for Heritage , Environment and Development has been appointed as the Solar City Cell by the Council of the Kochi Municipal Corporation.

The project is ongoing and a Solar City Cell Officer will be appointed soon to take forward the functions of Solar City Cell.
