Mosques of Cochin

The world famous Architect Smt. Patricia Fels in association with c-hed had made a detailed study about the vernacular mosques in Cochin and published the same as a book named “Mosques of Cochin” in association with Mapin Publication.

Mosques of Cochin is an invaluable contribution the documents the surviving vernacular mosques, which stand as powerful and visible expressions of Islam’s integration into the culture of Malabar. Mosques of Cochin help in understanding the cultural and social value of the traditional architecture of Kerala. The book documents a rapidly vanishing architecture of the vernacular mosques in Cochin.

As part of the book launch, a detailed discussion on the challenges of maintaining the old mosques in Cochin had been held in association with c-hed. A detailed presentation on the book was made by the author Patricia Tusa Fels.

The entire programme was coordinated by c-hed.

Vernacular Mosques of Cochin City

Cochin has long been one of the important trading centers of India, attracting seafarers and traders from far and wide.

vernacular 3This historic port-city on the Malabar coast in the state of Kerala, has some of the very first vernacular mosques, which reveals a distinctive bequest.

The surviving mosques of Cochin are a part of the rich cultural history of the Malabar Coast of India.  It stands as powerful visible expression of integration of two different cultures. Manyvernacular 1 of these fine old mosques have recently been demolished or remodeled, and replaced by concrete structures.

This is one of the projects that the c-hed has carried out with the support of Ford Foundation, the project has been completed and the same has been brought out in a book form.

” Mosques of Cochin” documents the surviving vernacular mosques, highlighting the beauty and historical importance of the mosque architecture of Kerala. The book aims at bringing greater recognition to these remarkable structures constructed by merchants, laborers and artisans. It also brings to our notice the vernacular heritage and its architecture that remained vernacularly secular in spirit. The book brings recognition to these vernacular mosques as highly valued resources.
